We offer video calls with members of the effective altruism community. We do this because we want to help you identify crucial considerations that could affect your plans for improving the world, e.g. what cause area or intervention to focus on. Identifying the cause that best fits your values and empirical beliefs is crucial, since focusing on the wrong one might mean losing impact in everything you do – be it your career choice, your donations, advocacy or any other form of activism.
While you can find a lot of content on such considerations online, navigating through all the information and identifying the pieces that are most relevant to your situation can be challenging, particularly if you haven’t been a member of the community for many years.
Not quite sure yet if such a call would be helpful to you? We think they are most useful if any of the following applies to you:
- You have recently discovered effective altruism, have read a lot of EA-related content and would appreciate some guidance for your further engagement with the ideas and community.
- You have been in the community for a while, are maybe even active in a local group, but haven’t really had the time to dig deep into some of the considerations that you would like to explore now.
- You have already thought about cause prioritization quite extensively, but would like to make sure you haven’t missed anything that could change your mind.
- You are quite familiar with the ideas of effective altruism but are particularly interested in EAF’s philosophy and work, and how having more suffering-focused values could affect your career choice.
While we don’t want to limit these calls to people who have been part of the community for a long time already, we do expect you to have some familiarity with the core ideas and causes of effective altruism. We therefore ask you to (have) read the pieces in bold in this EA reading list (or an equivalent of those) before applying. Beyond this, the only requirement is that you are excited about engaging with philosophical issues related to effective altruism, and be open to changing your plans based on the answers to those.
If you’re interested in doing a call, please fill in the form below, and we’ll get in touch with you shortly! The calls usually take 30-45 minutes, and can be done in English or in German. We look forward to talking to you! 🙂
